Kant argued that some principles, like mathematics or the forms of space and time, are necessary conditions for any possible experience. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/qrpascal.com\/index.php\/2024\/01\/25\/power-in-international-relations\/\">Waltz\u2019s<\/a> statement that \u201canarchy is the ordering principle of the international system\u201d is not an historical report; it is a\u00a0structural premise of his theory (Waltz, 1979).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Connection to formal reasoning and mathematics.<\/strong><br>Following&nbsp;Kant\u2019s&nbsp;usage, an&nbsp;<em>a priori<\/em>&nbsp;proposition is one that can be known through pure reason, like a mathematical axiom. Political scientists adopt the term to signal that a statement functions as an&nbsp;axiom or necessary condition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shared language across disciplines.<\/strong><br>Using&nbsp;<em>a priori<\/em>&nbsp;links political science to philosophy, law, and economics, where the distinction between&nbsp;<em>a priori<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>a posteriori<\/em>&nbsp;has been crucial for centuries.
