A Response"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Scott Atran\u2019s recent post on Psychology Today\u00a0<em>\u201cPeace Is a Modern Invention\u201d<\/em>\u00a0argues that for most of history, war was the rule and peace the pause; that peace as a stable, normative order emerged only through modern mechanisms and ideas. He cites Sir Henry Maine\u2019s claim that \u201cwar appears to be as old as mankind, but peace is a modern invention,\u201d and leans on Michael Howard\u2019s work\u00a0<em>The Invention of Peace<\/em>\u00a0to suggest that only in modernity did peace become \u201canchored in treaties, law, and international norms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there is much to appreciate in his framing, I want to push back on one foundational assumption: that\u00a0<strong>peace required invention<\/strong>. What if peace is more primordial, and\u00a0<em>war<\/em>\u00a0is what disturbs it\u2026 not the other way around?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Peace as Default, War as Disruption (A Different Starting Point)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1.\u00a0<strong>Before \u201cpeace\u201d was named, <\/strong>it was the way of life<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Language shapes what we think we see. In many societies before pervasive conflict, people may not have had to\u00a0<em>call<\/em>\u00a0their state of existence \u201cpeace\u201d, it was simply life. Just as certain Indigenous communities have no word for\u00a0<em>lying<\/em>\u00a0because deception is culturally inconceivable until contact disrupts their norm, peace as an explicit concept may emerge only when conflict becomes a visible alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In that sense, peace isn\u2019t invented \u2014&nbsp;<strong>war is what forced a new vocabulary<\/strong>&nbsp;of peace, treaties, and norms. This inverts the usual logic: rather than&nbsp;<em>peace emerging from war<\/em>, war emerges&nbsp;<em>against a backdrop of peace<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.&nbsp;<strong>Ethnographic, archaeological, and philosophical hints of primordial harmony<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some anthropologists argue that small-scale societies maintained internal harmony through consensus, restorative mechanisms, and social norms. Not because they had \u201cpeace treaties,\u201d but because warlike alternatives were invisible or unnecessary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rituals, taboos, and cosmological worldviews often embed nonviolence or coexistence prior to institutional order.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Philosophical traditions in many cultures presume a primordial harmony that human violence distorts (not the reverse).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.&nbsp;<strong>Modern peace is&nbsp;<em>one expression<\/em>&nbsp;of a deeper longing<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Modern peace systems (treaties, international law, peacekeeping, norms of non-aggression) are powerful and necessary in a world of states and large-scale violence. But they are\u00a0<strong>cultural artifacts layered over a deeper relational substrate<\/strong>. They do not create peace ex nihilo; they\u00a0<em>shape its large-scale expression<\/em>. They manage disruptions to what may have been more fluid modes of peaceful coexistence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Implications of This View<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We should distinguish\u00a0<strong>peace as an everyday relation<\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a0<strong>Peace as a formal system<\/strong>. The latter is modern; the former is perhaps simply human.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Critiques of modern peace systems (imperial peace, peace with injustice, peace enforced by violence) gain strength if we see formal peace as an overlay, not the root.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grassroots peace in communities, families, and small societies may remain the more authentic domain of peace. Modern institutions can support it, but cannot substitute entirely.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cModern Peace\u201d Conclusion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Is peace a modern invention? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only if we combine\u00a0<em>peace as formal order<\/em>\u00a0with the deeper\u00a0<em>relational ground of being<\/em>. The invention, I argue, was not peace itself, but the\u00a0<em>naming, structuring, and policing<\/em>\u00a0of peace in a world conditioned by large-scale conflict. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We didn\u2019t invent peace; we invented war-management tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>References:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Atran, S., PhD.
